India will be the largest market for WiMAX by 2012: Report
India will be the largest market for WiMax in the Asia-pacific region by 2012, with an estimated market share of 35.7 percent in terms of revenue and 15.8 million subscribers, says a report. The report by IT market research firm Springboard research titled "Laying the Foundation: WiMAX in Asia/Pacific 2008" is a research paper on WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) potentials in the Asia-Pacific region. The report further estimated that the number of WiMAX subscribers in the Asia-pacific region would grow from 230,000 in 2007 to 33.9 million by 2012, of which 46.7 percent would be from India, and the region's revenues would grow from 58 million dollar in 2007 to 5.46 billion dollar by that period at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 148 percent. The report attributes this predicted growth to factors like ample support from the government, ambitious investment plans by players like BSNL and Tata Communications, and the replacement of poor legacy fixed-line broadband infrastructure. "The next couple of years will be critical for WiMAX growth in Asia Pacific, and during that time, we are expecting services to be available for end users in over 10 countries," said Connectivity Research, Research Director Bryan Wang at the Springboard Research. The report also said that India's Wimax market will be followed by Japan, Pakistan and China and Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Samsung, Nortel and Cisco will be the key players to supply the Wimax equipments to the region. The report also said that mobile WiMAX services are estimated to bring more revenues and subscribers compared to fixed WiMAX services during the forecast period, it added.
